Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden
The Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden is the centre for historical information and activities in Leeuwarden. Our organization, the former Leeuwarden Municipal Archives, preserves the archives and collections of Leeuwarden from the late medieval times up to the present. Thousands of meters of historical documents are being preserved here and are made accessible to the public. Every one who wants to do research Leeuwarden history or its former inhabitants, is at the right place with us.

Leeuwarden, capital of the province of friesland
Leeuwarden is the capital of the northern province of Friesland, the only bi-lingual region of the Netherlands. Both Dutch and Frisian are the official languages of this province. Its population is slightly over 90.000. Leeuwarden arose from a number of three mounds at the shore of the Middelzee, an estuary of the North Sea. Already before the year 1000 there were people living here. From the tenth century these agricultural inhabitants started trading as well. Read more ...
